When we think of vampires, we tend to think of the classic movie depictions: the caped, pointy-toothed, dapper man in the crumbling mansion. They’re gothic villains, things out of romance novels and classical literature. The idea of fanged monsters running around and sucking the blood of hapless victims feels quaint and out of place in our modern, scientific world.
Which is why it’s so strange that in the early 1970s, a pair of vampire hunters stalked through a London cemetery, stakes in hand, doling out Buffy-style punishment on the undead as they rose from their coffins. But this actually happened, and happened that recently. It’s a story of good versus evil, of Satanic rites, occult societies and bloodsucking beasts set against the counterculture revolution of 1970s London. The lore, legend and truth of the Highgate Vampire will the subject of this series.
